The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council and Hydrogen Ukraine Join the Flagship EastGate H2V Project – A New Era of Hydrogen Cooperation Between Ukraine and the EU

The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council, in collaboration with Hydrogen Ukraine (a member of the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council), proudly announces its participation in the major European initiative EastGate H2V, aimed at creating an integrated hydrogen ecosystem in the Košice region of Slovakia, with a clear vision for cross-border expansion — particularly towards Ukraine.
The project, coordinated by Košice Self-governing Region, was selected under the Horizon Europe programme and is supported by €9 million in funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. The consortium includes 22 partners from 7 European countries, including Ukraine.
What is EastGate H2V?
EastGate H2V focuses on building a complete renewable hydrogen value chain — from production (4 MW of electrolysers) to distribution and end-use in key sectors such as:
- public transport (hydrogen-powered buses and a garbage truck)
- water transport (a tourist boat)
- aviation (hydrogen-fueled VTOL aircraft)
- industrial applications
Ukraine’s Role in the Project
Ukraine’s contribution goes far beyond participation. Through the national Zakarpattia Hydrogen Valley project, Hydrogen Ukraine is laying the groundwork for large-scale green hydrogen production, with the goal of transporting hydrogen to the Košice region via a future pipeline infrastructure. Western Ukraine’s strategic location and renewable resources provide a unique opportunity for cross-border integration.
In parallel, Ukraine is actively engaged in the development of the Central European Hydrogen Corridor, aimed at building a hydrogen transport network that will connect Ukraine with EU countries and ensure stable hydrogen supply for European markets.
EastGate H2V: Key Focus Areas
- Deployment of 4 MW of new electrolysers (2 MW alkaline and 2 MW PEM)
- Demonstration of hydrogen end-use in four transport and industrial applications
- Techno-economic studies for pipeline-scale hydrogen infrastructure between Slovakia and Ukraine
- Replication strategy for regional hydrogen ecosystems across Central and Eastern Europe
- Community engagement and awareness campaigns to promote the benefits of hydrogen energy
The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council proudly supports this strategic step toward climate neutrality and deeper hydrogen integration between Ukraine and the European Union. EastGate H2V is not only about new technologies — it’s a bold statement on how hydrogen cooperation can drive the carbon-free economy of tomorrow across the entire region.
