Education and science for a hydrogen breakthrough: partnership between Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council

The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council together with the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI) continue to actively develop educational, scientific and practical activities in the field of hydrogen technologies.

Last year, as part of the Memorandum of Cooperation, we jointly opened the «Innovative Technologies in Energy and Transport» educational and research laboratory, which has become an important centre for the practical training of future specialists. The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council handed over a Toyota Mirai fuel-cell car to the laboratory, which serves as a base for research and training. Scientists and students are actively working on the development of an electrolyser, a fuel cell and a refuelling system for the car, and have prepared the first drawings.

We have also jointly developed a project for a bachelor's degree programme in Automation and Technical Design of Hydrogen and Bioenergy Systems, which will start enrolling students next academic year.

At the same time, the certificate programme Engineering and Automation of Hydrogen Energy Systems and Technologies at the master's level has been successfully operating for two years. This programme provides advanced training for power engineers in the field of hydrogen system engineering. We are currently actively working on updating the programme in cooperation with stakeholders and developing a lecture plan that will start in January 2025.

In addition, we are preparing a textbook on hydrogen infrastructure for publication, which will be another step towards increasing access to high-quality specialised literature.

The development of hydrogen technologies is a key element of the energy transformation of Ukraine and the world. Training of highly qualified personnel in this field is a critical step to strengthen national scientific potential and create new opportunities for industry.

The cooperation between the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute not only contributes to the formation of new knowledge and competences, but also contributes to the global goal of transitioning to clean energy sources. We believe that this partnership will become an example of successful integration of science, education and innovation for a sustainable future.
