Argentina Unveils Ambitious National Hydrogen Strategy for a Green Future

September 12, 2023 - Argentina has taken a significant step towards a sustainable and low-emission future with the unveiling of its National Hydrogen Strategy. Presented by Argentina's Secretary of Strategic Affairs, this groundbreaking initiative outlines the nation's vision for hydrogen production and exportation.
Under the strategy's ambitious goals, Argentina aims to achieve a total domestic production of at least 5 million tonnes (Mt) per year of low-emission hydrogen by the year 2050. Of this production, 20% will be allocated to the local market, where it will be used to decarbonize key industries such as steel, petrochemical, and refining. Additionally, this hydrogen will support emerging applications, particularly in the realm of synthetic fuels. The remaining 80%, approximately 4 Mt per year, will be earmarked for export to the international market as a vital source of low-emission energy carriers.
To meet these production targets, Argentina plans to install a minimum of 30 gigawatts (GW) of electrolysis capacity and 55 GW of renewable electricity generation. This ambitious endeavor entails an eleven-fold increase in the current renewable energy generation capacity and more than doubling the total electricity generation capacity in Argentina. This shift towards renewable energy sources will be instrumental in producing green hydrogen efficiently.
Argentina's hydrogen production centers will be strategically located, taking into account the quality of resources and proximity to domestic markets and export ports. This approach aims to optimize the distribution and exportation of low-emission hydrogen, making it a valuable contributor to the global transition to cleaner energy.
Furthermore, Argentina intends to actively participate in the international hydrogen market by fostering the development of its entire value chain. By doing so, the country seeks to play a prominent role in shaping the future of the hydrogen industry on a global scale.
This National Hydrogen Strategy underscores Argentina's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with worldwide efforts to combat climate change. As the nation embarks on this transformative journey, it holds the potential to become a leading provider of low-emission hydrogen, contributing to a greener and more sustainable planet.
