The Ukrainian renewable energy sector has taken another big step forward

The Energy Association "Ukrainian Hydrogen Council" and other Ukrainian associations, including the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine, the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association and the Ukrainian Association of Energy Service Companies, signed the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation with the Bundesverband Erneuerbare Energie (BEE).

 

The main goal of the Memorandum is to create and maintain regular contacts and strengthen cooperation between Ukraine and Germany in the field of renewable energy and climate.

One of the main results of the collaboration will be the development of the "RePowerUA" plan for green transformation and decarbonization of the national economy, based on the experience of implementing the "RePowerEU" plan adopted by the European Commission. This program will help Ukraine achieve its international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease dependence on imported energy resources.

Over the past year, the price of natural gas has increased six-fold due to russia's invasion of Ukraine, reaching approximately 120 euros/MWh. However, renewable gases can become competitive in the short term, reducing energy costs for consumers and companies, as outlined in the Gas for Climate plan for implementing REPowerEU. The cost of producing grey hydrogen at a natural gas price of 100 euros/MWh is about 6 euros/kg, while the cost of producing green hydrogen ranges from 4 to 7 euros/kg. This means that renewable gases may be a more cost-effective option for companies and consumers than traditional coal and gas energy sources.

The Ukrainian side is looking forward to new successes in the field of renewable energy together with their German colleagues.
