Ukrainian Hydrogen Council and the GTSOU have established a specialized hydrogen section

The Energy Association "Ukrainian Hydrogen Council" and the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine have established a specialized hydrogen section to study the regulatory, scientific and technical aspects of the readiness of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine for hydrogen transportation.

The "Hydrogen Strategy for a Climate-Neutral Europe" aims to create electrolyzers for hydrogen production from renewable energy with a capacity of 40 GW in neighboring EU countries by 2030, with further exports to the EU to replace fossil fuels. Ukraine, given the potential of renewable energy, extensive pipeline infrastructure and a portfolio of technical competencies, is considered in this strategy as a reliable and promising partner. The creation of technical capabilities for reliable and cost-effective transportation of hydrogen from promising regions of its production to EU consumers, as well as distribution within Ukraine, is the subject of strategic planning of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine.

In order to consolidate the existing scientific and technical potential in Ukraine around the task of adapting the Gas Transmission System to hydrogen transportation, involving state and expert bodies, a scientific and technical section was established to determine the readiness of the GTS of Ukraine for hydrogen transportation. The section included representatives of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, LLC " Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine ", Energy Association "Ukrainian Hydrogen Council", the State Labor Service of Ukraine, LLC "Naftogazbudinformatika" LLC, National Aviation Institute, Technical Committee 197 "Hydrogen Technologies", Ivano- Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Gas Institute, Institute of Electric Welding, Є.О. E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, G. V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics (IMP), Institute of Physics and Mechanics. G.Karpenko, National Joint Stock Company “Naftogaz of Ukraine”, Polytechnic University (Warsaw), University of Science and Technology (Krakow).

At the first meeting, the participants discussed the current state of regulatory and technical framework, heard information from the GTS Operator of Ukraine on participation in joint projects with EU institutions in the field of hydrogen, expressed their vision of priority tasks to assess the readiness of GTS components for hydrogen transportation. Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine - Yuliya Pidkomorna - stressed the importance of the technical, applied component of the section and assured the participants that the work of the section will be taken into account in the formation of the Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy of Ukraine until 2030.

Further work of the section will be aimed at scientific, technical and expert support of the process of determining the readiness of the GTS for hydrogen transportation.
