A joint team of researchers from the Spanish energy companies Repsol and Enagas has developed a technology for the production of renewable hydrogen directly from solar energy, through a process known as photoeletrocatalysis (PEC).
The next step will be the construction of a demo plant in Repsol’s Puertollano industrial complex, with the aim of reaching commercial maturity before 2030.

ITM Power launches £250m share sale to fund hydrogen gigafactory.
It will use the money to build a second, bigger factory next to its existing plant near Sheffield, and another plant in an international market where there is significant demand for electrolyser machines.
In August ITM opened the world’s largest electrolyser factory near Sheffield. The plant has the capacity to produce 1,000MW (1GW) of electrolysis equipment per year. Its two new automated factories will raise its capacity to 5GW by 2024.

Portugal's largest utility EDP said it wanted to transform its 1.2 gigawatt (GW) coal-fired power plant in Sines that it shut in January into a green hydrogen hub, with first production expected by 2025.
EDP aims to transform Sines into a centre of hydrogen tech excellence, with 200 MW of renewable capacity, 100 MW of electrolysers and an R&D centre.

Plans for a 50MW-100MW hydrogen facility in Ain Sokhna, Egypt, have been unveiled by Scatec and Fertiglobe – and the duo want it to be operational in 2024.
Thought to be a first step towards a wider green hydrogen hub in Egypt, the plant will produce green hydrogen as a feedstock for green ammonia production.

Snam has launched its first corporate global-scale start-up acceleration programme focused on hydrogen.
Selected start-ups will then have access to an acceleration process lasting between four and six months, with research and development support, as well as mentoring, networking and technology testing.
At the end of the programme, selected start-ups will conduct feasibility studies with Snam for future hydrogen projects. Snam will then explore and support these technologies.
