Offshore wind energy is a platform for the development of hydrogen energy in Ukraine
On June 15, 2021, on Global Wind Day, the Public Union “Ukrainian Wind Energy Association” and the Turkish Offshore Wind Energy Association held a joint international webinar “Offshore wind power in the Black Sea: Turkey and Ukraine”.
The Energy Association «Ukrainian Hydrogen Council» also participated in the webinar.
According to the World Bank's analysis, the technical potential of offshore wind energy in the Black Sea countries reaches 435 GW, half of which fall within the maritime territory of Ukraine.
The EU Strategy for usage of the potential of marine renewable energy sources to create a climate-neutral future, which is part of the European Green Deal, points out the good natural potential of the Black Sea for offshore wind projects. Ukraine is currently a participant in regional cooperation in the context of the Common maritime agenda for the Black Sea.
Taking into account the experience of EU Member States and the Energy Community, launching an offshore wind energy market is one of the best ways to accelerate the achievement of the European Green Deal.
It should be emphasized that offshore wind energy is an attractive technology for the production of "green" hydrogen and a platform for the development of hydrogen energy in Ukraine in general.
In particular, Ukraine has the potential to build 250 GW of offshore hydropower plants on its territory with an average annual electricity production of 984 billion kWh and can provide an average annual production of 219 billion nm3 (19.5 million tons) of "green" hydrogen by electrolysis.
It should be reminded that in March this year the White Paper “Offshore Wind Energy and Green Hydrogen: Opening New Limits of Energy Capacity of Ukraine” was presented, prepared by the Energy Association «Ukrainian Hydrogen Council», Asters Law Firm and the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association with the support of the Renewable Energy Institute.
